Boatman’s Camp is a whitewater educational camp for adults on Wild and Scenic Desolation Canyon of the Green River that want to gain skills and experience with rowing and doing multi-day rafting trips.
"Deso" is not only a magical place to spend a week but it is also an excellent teaching environment – as it begins calm and increases in intensity as we travel downstream.
You will be learning hands-on rowing our 14, 16 and 18-foot rafts with experienced guides coaching and supporting you through Class I -III whitewater.
Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience and want to polish your skills and learn new ones Apakoa’s guides will teach you as an individual. With a guide per boat you will receive immediate feedback and direction to help you build a solid foundation of skills.
Topics covered include:
-
reading water
-
rigging boats
-
scouting
-
dealing with flipped boats
-
boat spacing
-
whitewater and wilderness safety
-
throw bags
-
river etiquette
Additionally, we will discuss:
-
camp cooking and dutch oven baking
-
menu planning
-
gear familiarization and selection
-
other aspects of running multi-day trips
What you can expect:
All trips are unique, but you can expect to begin the day with breakfast prepared by the guides followed by participating in and developing skill with boat rigging. On the water campers will row (with opportunities for rest) with a guide per boat to teach and ensure safety. We will stop riverside for lunch and occasional hikes. In the evening campers will unwind and take in the beauty and peace of Desolation Canyon while enjoying appetizers and mini -classes. You will learn the nuances of camp cooking rotating through cook crew for dinner (every several days). Savor dinner and discuss the days events, ask questions and share stories. Then fall asleep under the stars to rest up for what the river has in store for us the next day!
