Rowing Clinic Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have any previous rowing experience?

No, this course is suitable for total beginners.  It is also appropriate for advanced beginners or intermediate rowers who want to gain confidence with education and experience.

Is there a minimum age for this clinic?

We are happy to have students as young as 16 years old with a parent or guardian on the trip.

What kind of boats will we use?

You will be rowing our 14’ & 16’ Hyside rafts, with an option to try one of our 18’ rafts (Hyside & Aire) or our 16’ Jacks Plastic Welding cataraft.

Can I bring my own boat?

Contact us if you would like to bring your own boat and we can discuss options.

Can my friend/partner/child join me on the trip?

We do have limited spots for non- rowing student guests to join the trip.  Cost for non-students is $1900/person.

What if don’t like small planes/prefer to drive to the put-in?

Please let us know and we can help arrange a shuttle and adjust your trip cost.

Will I have my own boat for the entire trip?
Each boat will have two students so you will be sharing time on the oars.

Will I have a guide on my boat?

Yes. Each boat will have a guide trainer onboard for one on one education.

What will the river level be?

The flows on Desolation Canyon vary depending on the time of year and the snowpack.  The river is boatable and great for learning at a wide range of flows – from 2000 to 20000 CFS.  Our rowing clinics are run late spring and early summer, the time of the season when the water tends to be on the higher side due to snowmelt.

What should I wear/what is the weather like?

Late spring and early summer we can expect highs in the 60s – 70s and lows in the mid 30s – mid 40s.  Wind is common.  Check out the “Early or Late Season Items” on our Suggested Packing List.

Do you provide camping gear?

Yes.  We provide an inflatable sleeping pad (Aire Landing Pad), sleeping bag, sheet, pillow, sand free mat and a tent to be shared by two people.  You are also welcome to bring your own camping gear if you prefer.

Can I bring my musical instrument to play in camp?

Yes. Instruments guitar size or smaller are welcome!  Please contact us if you need a dry bag.
